The saddest goodbye

Every child dreams, and begs, and pleads their parents to let them get a pet. I know I did it. Finally, the day came.

This was no ordinary pet though. Oh no, this pet was the ultimate pet. We didn't just pick her up at the pet store and take her home. She had an even greater story of becoming a treasured member of our family.

Some people in the world don't treasure such creatures the way they should. They think pets are slaves and, when they don't behave, need discipline. Unfortunately, our wonder-pet had an owner just like this.

Thankfully, I have a father who is kind, loving, and so tender-hearted that when he saw this lovely creature laying in a ditch, he knew what needed to be done.

After taking this strange, scared, beaten little pup to the vet, we took her to our home.

Picking a name for such an amazing animal was hard work. Rufus, chomper, Doggy... no, none of them would do. This loving being was lucky, and so she should be named so.

The adventures with Lucky were some that will never be forgotten.

Watching the show Arthur when she was a puppy and barking at the dogs that came on the screen, running around the backyard like she had just drank three energy drinks, jumping into our little inflatable swimming pool on those unbearable summer afternoons...

I could go on for days.

"He is your friend, your partner, your defender, your dog.
You are his life, his love, his leader. He will be yours,
faithful and true, to the last beat of his heart. You owe it
to him to be worthy of such devotion."

To my dearest, loved, most adored little puppy in the whole wide world,

   I love you.
